Updated: Jul 20, 2022

You can download the full lesson plan for FREE with access to my music library! Click here to get on my email list and I’ll send you the code! These are resources that I used with my K-4th graders to create a fun lesson with a hot air balloon theme! Below you will see a list of resources I used with links to my TeachersPayTeachers . Feel free to adapt this lesson for your needs.

Hot Air Balloon Google Slides

This Google Slide is super interactive. Kids choose between three hot air balloons and answer correct rhythm questions to get their hot air balloon in the air! Reviews rhythm notation and rhythm syllables.

Hot Air Balloon Song and Game

This is a little song I made up to correlate with our hot air balloon theme. This is a great way to introduce or review sol and mi and to encourage singing! Correspond this with the game below to make it even more interactive. Even more older students enjoyed playing!

Game

“Hot air balloon up up up. Hot air balloon here we go! with my friends in groups of...”

Flow: Teach the song to the students first, then instruct students to get into a circle and hold hands. They are to walk in a circle while holding hands, and then when you get to the part “with my friends in groups of...” you will say a number. They must get into groups of whatever number you called out (2!), and those students who are not in the correct numbered groups are out.

Variations: Always do groups so no one gets out.

To Note: I have played this with classes that are very competitive, so making sure to preface the game with a pep-talk on being kind and caring to others.

Solfege Matching to song

For this game you will print out the Solfege matching game on TpT that corresponds to this unit.

Print out as many playing cards as you need.

Options: split class into two and have teams work together to put the song in the correct

order. OR split class into groups and have groups put the song in the correct order.

This is a great way to introduce new solfege or to review. Can also be used as an assessment to see students' comprehension as well as tonal melody hearing.

Color by Rhythm plus additional coloring pages

One may argue that coloring is only for little kids, but my 3rd and 4th graders loved coloring as much as any kinder.

Have students complete the Color by Rhythm Hot Air Balloon Ride! page. After, they can color the fun additional pages in the same packet.

Lesson Bundle + Free Lesson Plan!
